I put an aftermarket head unit in my 93 vert and used the Metra tuner bypass harness. After pulling some speakers out and playing musical amps "no pun intended" with some other speakers I have I've gotten it all to work. I'm not unhappy with the sound but there's no telling when another amp will die. I was thinking of keeping the Bose speakers but removing the amps and using the aftermarket head unit power (I think its 15 watts per channel) or a small 4 channel amp to run the stock Bose speakers. It wouldn't take much since they are 2 ohm. I have all the stuff I would need, it's just alot of work. Pulling seats, carpet, speakers, removing amps, running new wires, etc. Has anyone tried this already? I can't find anything similar online. Seems everybody just replaces it all. I just don't think new 6.5in. speakers are going to sound very good in the back of my vert and I don't want to take up what little room I have with a sub.
Unless you jump really big in price, you likely won't find a single speaker that is as good in the door as the Bose ones WERE and possibly still are. But, since they're 40 years old, they're subject to die soon. And then you're back in there to replace them.
I see you don't want to give up storage space (i didn't either) but I'd say store all the Bose stuff for resale value later and replace it with up-to-date speakers and an amp. Then... there are some really small 8" power woofers that don't take up much space. If you find one short enough, you could mount it vertically on the rear wall behind the top.

I replaced everything in my coupe so I've been down that route before. Since the amps dying are the real problem with the factory speakers I just wondered if anyone had tried to power them with an aftermarket amp. Maybe I'll go ahead and do it and see if I have any success. I have all the hardware already.

I took all the bose ''stuff' out of my Vette recently. Put a Sony head unit, pulled the passenger seat, passenger side of the console and rear floor carpet to run wire for the Infinity Kappa speakers. The Sony puts out 50 watts per channel, and pushes the Infinity speaker very well. No extra amp.
