When I brought my '89 out of storage this summer, I cheaped out and got a Chinese sending unit with an included fuel pump. The fuel pump seems ok, but the sending unit doesn't send a signal to the gauge.
So, I'm going to do it right, this time.
I ordered a Herko Stainless Steel Sending Unit, and wish to replace the pump.
My choices are Walbro, Delphi, and Bosch.
Any feedback on the fuel pump choices?
All I can tell you is when I replaced my sending unit in my 89 C4 they sent me unit that had rust on it, when I complained they sent me another worst then the one they sent me. I finally went to different vendor had one clean and ready for installation.
Has for pump, I can't tell, you but make sure you get clean sock they don't come has assembly, years back when I did it.
Also be careful with rubber boot top of tank, with age they rip easily.
Because of this reputation, you have to be cautious. Counterfeit "Walbros" have been prolific for at least 20 years. Right down to the 'Made in USA' logo, the counterfeits are chineese junk and don't last. Price can be an indication to be suspicious. Walbro was sold to another outfit a few years ago and now has a different brand name.
Here is a link to a supplier of Walbro products. (I've put this link up before.) This guy (his name is Ron) has been selling Walbro for decades, he only sells genuine product. I've met him personally, he's a stand-up Texan. I bought a 255 from him in 1998 for my Typhoon. 26 years and 100k miles later that pump is still in the tank functioning today.
When I don't have the lead time to wait for delivery from Ron, I've had pretty good success with Delphi when purchased over the counter at a reputable outfit like NAPA.
FWIW, I have Walbro pumps in my ZR-1 at the suggestion of Marc Haibeck.
Walbro was bought by TI, whoever they are. I'm not sure if Walbro makes pumps anymore, or even if they are made in China. TI is substituting another pump for the '89 Corvette because the OEM is not made anymore.
I bought a Delco unit last year and the float wasn't even close to the original. Read fine out of the car put bent totally wrong to read the proper level. Go with a pump kit from Racetronix. I've never had issues with them.

I was told to clean the reostat on the sending unit, that this is usualy the problem.

This is an old thread. I did this quite a while ago, but......
I did install the stainless Herko unit, and I'm glad I did. It worked flawlessly from day one, with no adjustment, and I'm sure will never have to be replaced. The rheostat is enclosed and much more substantial than the Chinese knockoff. I used a Walbro pump which never gave any problems.
I had to replace the tank when my pump failed. the PO JB ed the access panel to the tank and stripped all the screws.
Thete was also some corrosion and rust on the bottom so I figured do it now. That job sucked as every screw broke.

I had planned on getting a pump kit from Racetronix for my 89 with new wiring kit as mine has that filter thing on the wiring. I had sent some messages and pictures of mine to see which kit I should get. As it wasn't quite clear as there might be a running change. Though they never really responded as there was the issue of the purple wire being permanently attached to the fuel sending unit, so wasn't sure how their kit would deal with that regarding replacing the wiring harness that's inside the tank.
I had pulled my fuel sending unit just to check it out and it's still factory original with a torn sock. And has the factory pulsator that people replace with a fuel injector hose. I went ahead and took off the metal cap to clean the inside contacts that are for telling your gauge what the fuel level is at. And gently sanded the metal nub that rubs across the exposed wires as that can get corrosion affecting the signal, and put it back together.
One thing recommended is to get a new gasket and new stainless steel bolts that come with new sealing orings. Racetronix I believe sells this too.
