I bought a cheap little plastic welding kit off of Amazon and it has been really useful repairing some things on the Vette. As much brittle plastic is in these cars I highly recommend getting one. Today I repaired the driver's fender/ battery cover I picked up to replace my broken one. I found a crack in it so I'll show how I repaired a factory piece that's kinda hard to find. Here is the kit I got for around $30. Comes with tools, different types of plastic welding rods, and some other plastic repair items.
Added a little new plastic to the screen reinforced area and low spots in the opening. This area is on the inside so it doesn't have to be perfectly smooth. I still have to paint this panel so it will look fine when that's done. I don't think I have to worry about that crack anymore. This whole process took about 20 minutes.
Great job! I bought a very different kit and my results were terrible. So I've been using epoxy on all that type of stuff.
Can you post a link to the kit you bought?

I just found this one on Amazon, I bought it and iut will be at my house when I get home from work. Outstanding post mate!
I have a similar kit that I bought off of Amazon as well. I've used it for quite a bit of repairs on my Corvettes and my Porsche 944. The plastic is old and brittle on these cars but it does repair well with the proper tool and technique.
I just use a soldering iron. I use plastic from old bezels that are too far gone for filler material. You can use wire, paper clips, really fine nails or just about any thin metal to add support by burying it in the plastic with heat.
