Default Starting issues..

Hi..
Got a strange issue here..
Decided to change out a few items on my '87 over the winter..
1. Oil and filter
2. Coolant
3. Spark plugs
4. IAC valve
5. Ignition module
6. O2 sensor
7. Rear rotors, pads and shoes
8. Front pads.
9. Greased it all up
10. Rust prevention where necessary (I drive it all year round in our Scottish, inclement weather, salt, snow, mud etc. It aint no garage queen! )
Just passed its annual govt inspection, and runs really well.
..but,
Sometimes, when it's hot and I turn the key, it lights up but won't crank! Last year, I changed out the starter and I installed a heavy cable from the battery to the solenoid, via a starter button under the hood in case I had a relay failure.
No problem I thought, turn the key then press the starter button. The motor cranked over and fired, but immediately died everytime I tried it.
I can't figure out why this is. Its not fuel, as it runs well having changed out the pump, hoses, filter, FPR diaphragm, had the Rochester injectors refurbished and rebuilt the fuel rail last winter.
Anyone got any idea what's up?

If it is not broke do not replace it. If it is not original replacement toss it. New means never ever worked!

If I understood correctly you described two issues. 1st is no turn over with key and 2nd is turn over (crank) with override button and start then die. Is this correct?

On the no crank with key I will assume auto trans. There is a neutral safety switch that will only allow cranking in part and neutral. When it does it again try shifting to neutral to verify. Could also be actual electrical switch on steering column or starter relay issue.

1st paragraph is spot on..

it's an auto, right enough. I just wondered if whatever was affecting the 'no key crank or start' was inhibiting the car to fire too.
With it lit up off the key, and pressing my starter button, it would always crank and fire but instantly it will stop. This is when it's hot.
This morning when I tried it, it started instantly off the key and idled smoothly. I'm beginning to wonder if the starter solenoid is heat soaking, but if this was the case, why is it cranking over off my starter button, and what is shutting it down just as it fires?

being hot does increase electrical resistance. Also if you have wear in the starter the heat related expansion can allow the armature to drop and touch the stator causing drag and increased amperage draw.

I am lost on the fire then die. It it fired seems like electricity is everywhere it needs to be and it should run. When you replaced the Ignition module did you change the coil also?

The coil is under a year old with only 5k miles on it. I'm going to fit a heat shield on the pipe under the starter to see if it makes a difference, but I'm still thinking there's a problem with starting, electrical wise.
Maybe something to do with the starter relay connections, something inhibiting it starting even though I can crank it directly from the battery..

How about this being a vats issue, where the key or ignition contacts are starting to fail ?
