Default Backup ICM

I’m wanting to get a backup ICM to keep on hand. Incidentally, the part catalog shows my 96 LT1 and my 01 Silverado 4.3 share the same ICM so I feel like I can kill two birds with one stone.

I am considering buying a Delphi brand for backup. Do any of you have experience with Delphi brand ICM’s and their quality and reliability?

Thanks

I purchased and installed a Delphi ICM on my 92 LT1 in July 2023. It's been driven about 18,000 miles since including a cross-country and return last August. (Hot!) The car runs really well. I also purchased another Delphi, same P/N to carry as a back up.

I haven't had any 'bad' experiences with Delphi, but as with anything, one guy's experiences isn't a great testimonial for overall reliability.

Recent experiences with chain store purchases has me checking the part right at the counter for any signs of previous installation such as witness marks on terminals or mounting locations. It's become too possible to find a bad part that was returned for credit. For decades, the mantra was "No returns on electrical parts." No longer. The chain stores accept returns on anything. Beware, be observant.

Wells Vehicle Electronics ICM from Rockauto.

I've had mine for over a year. Just did a 1500 mile trip...no problems whatsoever. I actually replaced it with the original GM unit just a few days ago. I swear the GM unit made the car sluggish, so I put the WVE unit back in and the car drives beautifully. One last thing, which sold me on this unit...the pictures on RA for the WVE and Delco ICMs were the same. It tells me Delco is sourcing from WVE.

Ric

EDIT: Two more things...WVE is way cheaper than the Delco unit and it is made in the US of A.

Here’s what I wound up doing.

Considering a host of other GM vehicles use the same ICM as my 96 Vette, including many of the GMT-800 trucks, I went to the LKQ pick your part near me. I pulled a GM ICM from a 06 4.3 GMC Sierra and another from a 04 4.3 Chevy Silverado. They cost me $24.95 each. I had my 01 Silverado with me and I tested both ICM’s on it and confirmed they both worked before leaving the lot.

I now have a spare GM ICM which I’m keeping one in the Vette and one in the Silverado.

So, if you have a 96 LT1 or LT4, finding backup ICM’s should be cheap and easy in the boneyards. That’s genuine GM ones.

By the way, Rock Auto was useful to me in this process because their cross references of how single parts fit various vehicles is what gave me the idea to go to the boneyard
