Hello all, I have a 1992 6 spd base model. On the way home from work the other day the engine light came on and the car died. before I had time to pull over it came back to life. But less than a minute later it died again. I pulled into a parking lot and tried to restart. I would not start. Without thinking I removed the negative battery terminal and reconnected it. The car then started and I finished my drive home about 10 miles without problems
Today I jumped A and G on the ALDL and had no codes which makes sense with the disconnecting of the battery. I took the car for a short drive to the local high school to be able to drive around the empty parking lot. As I was pulling in the engine light illuminated and the car died. It restarted and I drove for a few hundred feet and it died again. I parked, jumped A and G and I had an H16 code. From what I understand is the low resolution pulse of the Opti. The opti in the car is an AIP Opti that I installed myself almost 2 years ago it will be 2 years exactly in July.
Also I noticed that the car got to about 170 coolant temp when the problem occurred. I did not notice the temp on the car the first time it died on the way home from work but where I was in the drive the car would not have been fully warmed up.
It looks like I may have to replace the Opti again. What else if anything could an H16 indicate?
I replaced the opti. Took the car for a test spin, not long, but long enough that the problem would have reoccurred. When a longer drive is done I will be satisfied that the problem is resolved. I replaced it with another AIP Opti as there is a good amount of reported satisfaction with those units and they are fairly cheap. I am getting pretty good at replacing opti's, not that I want to be.
