Default Dex VI

i was getting stuff together to change gear and trans fluid in my '85 4 + 3 - dex 3 seems to be more elusive than before - lots of this dex VI - so is this now the acceptable replacement for the dex 3 recommended for the 4+3 - has anyone put this in theirs yet? I was still looking for the old stuff conventional dex 3 -

any thoughts?

thanks

I have always been informed that the Dexron is back compatible but not forward compatible. Dex VI can be used in Dex III applications. I haven't changed the trans fluid yet on my vehicle but I have done so for other vehicles with no issues.

You asked if anyone has used the VI. Yes, I did in my 96 and it shifts fine and still looks new after a few years. I don't think Dextron would come out with a modern synthetic that they say is backwards compatible that in fact hurts older transmissions. Dan

thanks - you are probably right - reading and re-reading so many of the old posts - older posts - hear how we need to steer clear of synthetics for fear of leaks - definitely made me skeptical - to say the least

from Valvoline

Both our Dex/Merc ATF and our Dexron VI ATF cover the Dexron III fluid specification. Either may be used and both are fully compatible with the OEM fluid.

for anyone - FYI stuff
