Default 84` Water Pump Question

I got around to replacing my water pump which had a slight leak. I purchased and ACDelco replacement, and I didn't realize that I had to remove a piece off the old one. By the time I'd realized, it had already been picked up. Does anyone know what this specific part is called? I assume it's an inlet/outlet of some sort, but I want to buy the correct part. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Using GM# 3849848 as a reference I believe should get you what you need. What size was the heater hose that you removed from the nipple? I believe it should be 3/4. You might want to search eBay with that number and see if it visually appears to be like what you tossed. There should be several to compare.

Who was it picked up by? I would try to get my hands on your original pump again, if at all possible! That pipe fitting is pretty hard to find and as much as $50 if you want a real NOS one! I'm not saying you can't find a cheaper alternative, but the actual GM corvette pieces are not growing on trees these days! If you're lucky enough to get your pump back to remove it, I highly suggest you use a propane torch to heat up the water pump thread boss and use the appropriate size wrench towards the nipple end where it's formed with two flat spots...no Vise-Grips!!! Good luck👍

Unfortunately, it was taken away by the garbage truck. I tossed it not thinking anything about it, and it was picked up the very next morning so it's long gone. I'm not die hard on keeping it all GM. It's pretty wore out, and I got it for $3K just to cruise around with the top off. I'm just trying to drive it a little more before it gets retired till next summer.

I'll have to look when I get a chance. I don't have a garage and it's already late or I'd go look now. It does look similar. I actually already bought a different part thinking it was the one I needed, and it was incorrect. It was my fault, should've asked on here before trying to buy it off of the pictures alone.

Most any 70' & '80's GM 307/305/350/396/454 etc should have that same fitting. An original after looking at an eBay image I'd think would be easy to ID. Original would have been 2 3/4 long w 1/2-14 threads and the hex I'd think is 7/8?

The hole in the pump is 1/2" FPT.

You can use a 1/2" pipe nipple from Ace Hardware or Home Depot. Get one 3" long and cut the threads off of one end. Use channel locks to install it in the pump, use sealant, it doesn't have to be super tight. The 3/4" hose will fit a bit snug on the O.D of the 1/2 pipe. Mark the pipe about 1" from the cut off end and be sure the hose goes on at least to the mark. Install the clamp centered on the pipe so there is full width of the clamp contact with the pipe. I would suggest using a new clamp; you want good 'squeeze' because the pipe won't have a ridge on it to minimize the possibility of the hose and clamp sliding off. This will work.

No waiting for parts. You can get the project done and drive it. Cheers.

EDIT/ADD:

I had a brain fart that I've seen these in the HELP! line. So I looked it up.

Dorman HELP! 56237 is the correct nipple. The chain stores should have this or be able to get it in a day.

Went to the local o'reillys and they had one in stock for $10. An exact fit. Thanks for the help everyone.

Make sure you pipe dope it up or it'll leak.

I was going to use RTV grey. When I rebuilt my Subaru motor it called for it on a lot of the bolts. Would that be fine for this application too? I already had a tube on hand.

It will be ok to use RTV but it has to be completely dry before adding coolant. The pipe tape or paste would be the preferred method.

The reason the Subaru called for RTV on the bolts is that the bolts will pass through a section where coolant will flow. As a former Toyota technician, I would replace a lot of water pumps on the 2GR-FE and 1GR-FE engines that required the sealer on the threads. The bolts would pass through into the front cover and then the block where sealer was required to prevent coolant leaks. The sealer never really dries and the bolts are messy when removed.
