What would cause the quarter panel to crack and chip out in the area I’ve circled? I’ve seen a few other cars with the same cracked area but found no answers. Oh, thanks for the add. Look forward to reading through the forum. Also, the rag is there to keep out stink bugs. I’ve recently added new weatherstrip to replace the old garbage. Also, were these cars notorious for poor fit and finish? My car in the picture is an 84.

In my case the '84 Z-51 suspension is the culprit. Driving with the targa top removed allows the body to flex in that spot. Mine looks the exact same, the passenger side is a bit worse. I left the top on this year to keep it from degrading any more.
I also have the z51 suspension. I’m sure if that’s what the cause for yours to crack in the same location, I’m sure that’s why mine did as well. If I have the body repainted, I’ll have them reinforce that’s area
