Default DynaMat Advice

Hi All,

Just got my hands on a 1994 Corvette. Great car and fun to drive, a real head turner. One thing I didn't expect was the level of road noise on the highway. I have heard that people use DynaMat, especially in the rear cargo area to reduce road noise. Anyone tried this? There's a DynaMat Extreme, and now a ProX which is twice as thick and a bit more expensive. Anyone have experience with these? Wondering if it;'s worth it to use the ProX in the hatch area, and Extreme everywhere else?

Thanks,

Aaron

What is the date code on your tires? If they're "old" or low on tread they could be contributing to the noise. A much more expensive solution but if needed, one you'd need to do at some point anyways.

Replacing my 10-year-old set reduced the noise quite noticeably.

Good point. They are from 2019. Continental tires.

That new dynamat is interesting, but pricey.

The best stuff years ago was from a company called SDS, they sold CLD tiles that had an 8 mill foil layer (not really a foil at that point, it was a thin sheet, lol). But they did the research and built the best damn material you could get for it. You only had to put 25% coverage, which in practice was more like 1 or 2 pieces per panel, and it worked awesome.

The new dynamat stuff is only 5 mil foil. If it was me (or the next time I need to do this job), I would get second skin audio damplifiet pro CLD tiles, they're 6.5 mil thick, which is as close as I've seen to the old SDS good stuff.

All that said, new tires will help a lot. Don't expect miracles though, it's a 90s sports car that came out in the early 80s and was designed in the late 70z. It's not going to be modern car quiet.

Resonix if you want the best. The mega CLD are 12 mil foil... but it's priced accordingly. There are a slew of tests conducted on the various CLDs that show how they work. I did my truck last summer and it was an impressive difference. The vette is shockingly quiet for a 40 year old vehicle with the top on.

One thing that actually works pretty decent is to put that stuff on top of the rear wheel wells (the plastic pieces). Cheap and easy. My entire car is done with it, but didnt do wheel wells until this summer, and could actually hear the difference.
