Just know that you will not see any gain at any speed. It's been track tested by yours truly.
Although forum rules now forbid posting about it... some people here don't race only at the track. I would assume that this mod would help at higher speeds that most cannot obtain at the track. If nothing else, you can say you modified your 'vette. I did a stealth cut on my lid, Dremel cut around it, but left enough to put the plastic thing back on with pop rivets, so it looks totally stock. Modified the inside of the plastic thing too by cutting the lips to match the size of the cut lid. Can't tell it's there by looking or driving (I don't race it, I just did it for the hell of it. Couldn't hurt...)
If anything, just think of it this way: Whether you gain 1 HP or 10 HP out of it, you still gained something, no matter how negligable it is. Everything adds up, and one less mod means that much less total power in the end. If it's free, then why the hell not? :smash:
About the only thing it does is get your filter dirtier, quicker.
:iagree:
A buddy of mine has had his cut out on his trans am..he couldn't believe how fast that filter became filthy. He was having to clean it once every couple of weeks( daily driver). He told me that he noticed absolutely no difference in the car's performance overall. (Sounded better but that's all.) He finally reached futility with it....ordered another original box and replaced it.
I drive mine all the time (even when some of you would cringe! ) and I've never noticed it getting dirtier. Only cleaned it once in about 2 yrs and even then it didn't need it. I think it did make a difference, though, when i got a cut lid. Its cheap but I'd say for a stock engine, you wouldn't notice it very much. Maybe for the more modified cars that require better air flow, you would see something. But a stock engine will see a small increase, IMO.
You also have to remember that on a stock car, you can flow as much air as you want, but will it help since the throttlebody is still the same size? Think about it.
'Course...if you got $50 or so burning a hole in your pocket...you can BUY an open lid from MAD and still have your original. That's what i did...and i gotta agree with everyone else....no SOP difference...but a "potential restriction" was eliminated.
If the filter gets dirtier that much faster.. doesnt that mean more air is going towards it? I thought the whole goal was to get as much air to the motor as possible, or free up any restrictions. I know that when i first bought the car i removed the factory lid and only about 10% of the filter - a little square in the middle- was dirty, all around the square looked brand new. When you quickly go WOT with the hood up in park you can hear a huge difference in sound although this doesnt mean more power. I think the question is "Can you really feel 5 or 10 horsepower?" I seriously doubt it. Temperatures and conditions play such a huge role that duplicating runs on different days is nearly impossible. I dont mean to cause a commotion but i think every little mod really adds up.
