Has anyone ever tried to put wheels on a C4 that were less than 17" wide? I was thinking that might look different and cool, and maybe even transfer more power to the ground, but there's also a chance the smaller wheels wouldn't even fit over the breaks...

1984 TO 1988 came with 16" wheels. The side walls have a lot more rubber showing. The 17" look much better with shorter side walls. That means better cornering. You would lose some handling control with smaller wheels and widder side walls.
I'm not sure how cool it looks but I'd like to be able to get a set of rear 15" rims to mount some et streets that match the 17" front wheels (GS or ZR1). My 15" et streets hook much better (more sidewall and 28” tall) than my 16" et streets but the 15" rims don't match and attracts officer friendly.
