I replaced the fuel pump on my '85. The procedure took me some time to do (approximately a few hours or less) as I wanted to be careful and correct.

I was able to purchase a new fuel pump from the GM dealership. Prior to starting the fuel removal procedure, I unhooked the cables from the battery. The entire fuel pump was removed, and replaced, from the top of the car through the gas tank filler location. Additionally, I replaced the inline fuel filter as well at the time of the fuel pump replacement because I wanted eliminate any potential fuel line obstructions.

One of the easiest I’ve ever replaced. I wouldn’t let this clown near my car! If you have any mechanical skills at all do it yourself.

To access the fuel pump, you will remove the fuel filler door assembly. There are 4 coarse screws either torx bit heads that fasten the filler door assembly to the body. From there, disconnect the fuel pump connector, the three fuel lines, and then remove the bolts around the perimeter of the sending unit. The sending unit comes out of the top of the tank and from there you can put it on the bench and remove and replace the pump, which is part of the pickup/sending unit assembly. Here is a picture of the assembly. This one is on my father in law's 93 that I onstalled last summer:

In this picture of my 93, you can see the sender assembly attached to the top of the tank. This will give you an idea of what you're looking at when you replace the pump:

You will want to take care to not break any bolts off in the tank when removing the sending unit assembly. Be sure to replace the mating gasket that goes between the tank and the sending unit.

As others have said. This is a very straightforward repair that is done from the top of the fuel tank. If someone told you they need to get at it from the bottom then they have no idea about C4’s and probably shouldn’t be touching your car

When I replaced mine years ago I also replaced the boot, don't know if they're available but good idea, they do dry out.

There are a number of "how to" write ups here on the forums and videos on utube. If you have basic tools and mechanical knowledge you can do it yourself. If not, get a new mechanic!

Ask him to show you the access panel where he gets to the fuel pump. Dan

The only issue I had when replacing mine was to pull one of fuel hoses off from the top of the assembly. I asked here and was told to use plyers to push hose off. Worked perfectly. Use this forum to get proper information on any issues you come across. As to the what the service manager told you, my guess is he is young (or stupid) and he never had to write up a work order for a C4

WoW, Thanks for all the input about the fuel pump, but guess what.....It turned out to be an electrical issue with the spark thingy. Hit a bump and it knocks it out of whack. I just replaced the opispark last year...

As others have said, you go to the fuel pump from the top. I'd buy a new gasket and new bolts that have the proper orings. One of the forum sponsors I believe sells a kit. The sponsor that says fuel pump kits. And get a new sock, aka small filter that goes under the pump. And get a replacement fuel injector hose with proper clamps to replace the dampner. And also go ahead and replace the fuel filter while you're at it. There are articles around where ever on doing a C4 fuel pump replacement.
