Default Convertible vs coupe driving experience

Anyone spent much time in each? I’ve only had coupes until my 87 Callaway vert, and I have to say whether it’s a matter of condition, or what, but the vert drives better than the coupes.

handles great, doesn’t feel like much flex, no bump steer, no creaks, no rattles, oversteer on throttle on corner exits, just a predictable and great car to drive:

got me thinking is this due to the “X brace” the verts have?

is it possible to swap the X brace from a vert to a coupe to stiffen things up, reduce some creaking and reduce some flex.

and brace question aside, what have your experiences been in the verts vs coupes? I still prefer the coupe styling but man the vert impressed me once inside and driving.

The coups have no bracing as the convertibles do. The coups flex when new as mine does,it is the gift that keeps on giving. Has a lot effect on the Top removal which when placing back on the dealers did not want to work on new . In 93 I called the factory Talked to Gordon KiloIbrew the hot line to problems and was told bean counters were the problem.

I added the vert x brace to my coupe. I think it helped tighten everything up.

Will it improve lap times? Maybe? Probably not? Did it feel worth it to me when driving? Yes.

That said, it's kind of a pain in the *** to do. You have to get it in place, then drill the frame in the back, then install rivnuts, and frankly those aren't perfect.

If the darned stabilizer kit they sell for the coupes wasn't so outlandishly expensive for what it is I'd pick one up. I don't drive it enough any more to justify the expense, though.

I'd thought about one of those bars you install in place of the top, but it seems to me that that defeats the purpose of taking the top off, for the most part.

But, yeah, definitely the X brace makes the difference of the verts.

.
The Mild2Wild brace makes a huge difference with basically the same affect of being topless. Unfortunately it appears they are no longer in business.

Some coupes did have the bracing, Z51 and Z52 packages had a stiffener. My Z52 has KYB's which are not as stout as the Bilsteins yet I still have no noticeable body roll or flex (probably with lid on but I never noticed).

Not from the factory they didn't. That was a main argument people used for "they do nothing on the coupes". Z51/z52 were just shocks, swaybars, and springs.

yeah I was going to ask for clarification on that, have NEVER heard that, not even on the zr1 or Callaway coupes did I ever read of the x braces getting installed let alone on a z51…

Not the X brace, but frame stiffeners.

The flip side of the x-brace , assuming one owns a vert, is that I'd hate to have to uninstall and reinstall that thing every time I needed to get under the car and do something.

I have a vert and have considered switching to a Vette2Vette system specifically for this reason.

It's not as bad as I expected going in. Not convenient, but not a huge deal, it comes off in like 3 minutes.

I installed a Vette2Vette system on my 91 FX3 coupe that had a decent amount of miles on it. It made a world of difference and felt like a new car. Once you spend the money you will not regret it.
I have owned both convertible and coupe Corvettes through the years from C2, C3 and C4 models. The biggest difference? You can't pick your nose with the top down on a vert as others can see you do it! Also, sh** blows out of the vert if you don't secure it when the top is down.

The additional frame reinforcement that the convertibles had (NOT the x-brace, but the 'brackets' at the front that the x-brace bolts to) was indeed added to the coupes for the 1987 Z51. (Not positive that it was added for the Z52). The front fixed crossmember in front of the crank pulley is also a larger section. The braces between the crossmember and the frame are larger and held with 2 bolts on each end (8 total) instead of 1 bolt (4 total). For 1988 and later these enhancements were on all frames regardless of Z51/Z52.

The empty front X-brace holes on a Coupe are in the reinforcement / brackets. Look at any 84-86 coupe and then at an 88-up. The difference is apparent. Its also a lot easier to change the fuel filter in the early cars, access is better.

There's a thread on here with a detailed discussion, including pics and an explanation as to why there are two lower radiator hose part numbers for 1987 depending on "With Handling Package" or not.
