Default window tint

Is there an easy way to remove old window tint? A friend told me to peel the paper off and then use windex-w/amoniaD to remove the glue. Just wanted to get a few more opnions before I attempted. The tint shop wants 200.00 to remove :crazy:

I've not had a lot of experience w/ this, but when I removed the tint from the back window of my truck it just took some patience and a little help from a razor blade to scrape some of the gunk off. :)

I had to do that on my 89 IROC-Z a long time ago. Easiest way to do it ? You will need to get a water bottle spray filled with warm water and dishwashing soap. Spray the window tint all over and let it soak for about a minute. Keep doing this several times. When you are ready use a razor blade and start scraping away from the top down and most of the time it will peel away easily. Some areas might stick more than others. The razor blade helps a great deal. And if in the end you still have glue on the window then go to the Auto store and buy a can of "Sticker Shocker" This will melt away the glue and it makes scraping away or wiping away easy. This is done also for removing bumper stickers but without the razor blade so you don't scratch up the paint. Good luck ! :thumbs:

I'm not sure but I think one of those little household type steam cleaners may work. I do know that $200 is way too much! I removed my hatch glass and took it to the tint shop. They charged me $125 to remove the old tint and retint it.

Caution::eek:

If you cut or damage the copper defroster grid it won't work again without a repair kit.

You're right... never use a razor blade on the rear window if you have the defroster. You will damage it. Better save that one for the shop to do professionally.

You'll need a spray bottle with ammonia, a black plastic garbage bag, a credit card (or similar) and the sun.

Spray the tint down with the ammonia enought to wet it fully.

Take the plastic bag and put it over the window if you can, or lay it on top (outside) of the window. Place car in sun for 1/2 hour.

Check tint, if it's starting to peel and bubble, try to pull some off using the card as a scraper.

If it puts up a fight, peel it back as far as you can, then apply more ammonia and the bag for 1/2 hour again. Repeat as necessary.

Use goof-off or goo-gone to remove the residue after tint is removed.
