Default Ecm?

Hello everyone,

I am having a lot of trouble trying to get the 89 6 spd to be driveable. It will start and sometimes idle. Quick recap. Verified the injectors are working mechanically and electrically. Spark to each plug used a timing light. 18 inches of vacuum, 40 psi fuel pressure.
I set the timing to TDC #1. The mark on the balancer is at zero on the timing tab. Dropped in the distributor set to #1. Fire up the car. Timing is at 12 degrees before TDC. I cannot rotate the distributor enough to get to 6 degrees. The car stalls.

If I have the EST disconnected. Does the ECM have any control over the spark? A friend of mine said it does. I thought the only time the ECM has control over the timing is when the EST is connected.

I plan on removing the alternator and remarking the balancer. Setting the distributor to #1 and starting the engine. My thought is if the mark is before the tab. The problem is the timing chain. My friend said it can still be the ECM.

I really need some help here.

Thank you.

You need to disconnect the ESC plug near the brake booster and set the timing to 6 degrees. Then turn the car off and reconnect the the ESC and start he up and see how she runs.
