I recently had a new hi torque starter installed and am having problems with it. Most of the time, when I turn the key to start the car, the starter keeps cranking even if I release the key from the start position. I've also noticed that the starter keeps going a couple of seconds after I've let go of the key.
Some times the car has already started and the starter still keeps cranking (luckily, the starter disengages ffrom the flywheel so you don't hear the grinding squeal). Sad thing is that even if I turn the key to the off position it still keeps cranking. I end up having to go through a sequence of turning the key back to the on and off position several times and hitting the brake to stop it. Sometimes if I rev the engine hard once it starts it helps with stopping the starter.
To make matters worse, the car has a remote starter. I don't know if this has anything to do with it. I am in the process of having the old alarm removed and getting a new one in so hopefully that will help.
hi,check to make sure that your positive battery terminal on your starter solenid is not touching the ignition terminal on your solenid.its the small terminal near the engine block,.good luck ,greg84
I have had about three starters do this to me. Two in my 91 L98 and one in my 96 LT4. I figured out it was the exhaust heating up really high due to too much fuel. Basically the starters got heat damaged. A heat shield blanket took care of the issues.
Sounds like the solinoid is sticking or the return spring is week or a really wild guess that the magnetic field from the starter motor is causing the solinoid to energize slightly and that can slow the field collapese in the solinoid, But it's just a SWAG!
I just had a problem with this myself while installing a reman. job on a stock LT-1. In my case, my old starter was failing and it got stuck and wouldn't release despite trying some of the tricks you mentioned.
Since you can actually get the starter to disengage, I'd guess it might be some sort of clearance problem when it engages. Shims or something required? Also, I noticed on mine that when the drive gear pops out, it rotates as the shaft moves to facilitate connection with the flywheel. Perhaps some starters don't do this or do it in a different direction which might tend to keep them stuck on the flywheel despite the force of the return spring ?? I dunno...I'm reaching here.
Sounds like the bindix gear is too close to the flywheel gear and it is hanging on. YOu need a shim. You can get those at any good parts house with instructions. Some applicatoins come with shims.
