I just bought my first Corvette! It's a 92 convertible with a 6-speed. I've never owned a Corvette so I'm confused with some of the differences and have a few questions for the list experts.
I noticed more transmission gear noise than I'm use to. I'm told that the Corvette 6-speed does tend to make more noise. Is that true?
My driver's bolster is worn like most other I've seen. Is there any good places to have the leather seats re-done?
Also, the weather stripping is showing quite a bit of wear. Where is the best place to buy replacements?
Welcome to the forum and congradulation on your vette. The 6 speed does tend to be a tad noisier that most of the manual trans that I have driven, but I hardly notice it because of the big grin I have while driving. I think it blocks my ears :D
I believe that the earlier years of the ZF6 had straighter cut gears than the later years. This was to make them more durable. Remember this tranny had to handle the LT5.
Congratulations on the 1992 'vert. The side bolster wear is common, the dye wears off. Some forum members have found the leather repair kit from this place to work pretty good, in that the dye they supplies matches the GM colors: http://www.leatherrepairkits.com/
You will find any answer here! There is tons of information available. Try doing a search on the left of the screen. It amazes me everytime that I have a question, how much info I get when I use the search..
Good luck with the new vette. There are many sources for the items you need. Get copies of the catalogs from Mid America, Ecklers, Corvette Central, and Paddock Parts. You will find just about anything you want from them. Re- dying the bolster should work fine and save you lots of money. Enjoy the hew wheels. :)
Welcome to the forum. Good choice of car but then I am biased as you can see.
The transmission can be noisy. You can try new gear oil if you want but it will still make noise. I just had my local dealer change the gear oil in the transmission and rea-end because it seem to be a good thing to do. I put a lot of miles on mine.
I replaced all of my weather stripping. I tried several sources and the stuff from GM is by far the best in terms of fit, finish, and softness. It is also more expensive. Don't be afraid to bargin with your local Chevy dealer's parts guy. If you are going to buy enought stuff they can discount. They may also be willing to price match.
It really pays to shop around on all parts for your vette. Everyone charges the corvette tax, but some aren't as bad as others. Always check pricing with Jeff Kopp, Superior Chevrolet Wholesale parts dept. @ 1-800-728-8267. He has saved me much $$$ over the past year.
