I believe it was 1990, with the new dash design. It's possible it was an option on 89 models, but I know it didn't go any earlier than that.

I agree...it appears in the Corvette Black Book that the first standard CD was offered in the 1990 model..

So will the 1990 and newer head unit work in an 87? I really want a CD player but would like to keep the factory look, I have got some cheesy alpine in there right now and it just doesnt work or look that good

SOme of the Cadillac Bose CD units will work - check the advertisers in Corvette fever mag - often they have just what you are looking for as IMO, the 90+ units would look like trash in an 89-older :cheers:

1990. I have one. The original unit is not very good quality. I took mine out and sent it to Dr. Don's in Texas. He rebuilt the system and upgraded the CD mechanism to a 96. That way I can play store bought CDs & ones that I burn myself. Prior to 96, you can't play self burned CDs. You might try him for the unit you are looking for to install in your 87. Its sounds like '90 is the unanimous answer. My only qustion is that my '89 IROC had a factory Delco CD unit and I'm finding difficult to believe that a Camaro had a CD option berfore a Corvette??

My 90 convertible has the factory CD unit in it. I can play store bought CD's or CD's I burn at home. The only probably with the unit is that it is old technology, so when it is very cold outside it won't play a CD until the cabin is up to a decent temp.
