The LT4 was an option for any base or Collector Edition '96 Corvette, coupe or convertible. It was a mandatory option for Grand Sport coupes and convertbles.
In 1997, there were ~125 f-bodies with the LT4. The engine install was performed by SLP and could be ordered through Chevrolet, much like the arrangement they had with Callaway for the Twin Turbo Vettes. Someone I'm sure will chime in with the specifics. A guy in my neighborhood has a 30th Anniversary Camaro with the LT4. White with Hugger Orange stripes. Neat car.

The only thing I would add is that all LT4s were 6-speeds... If you wanted a 6-speed in '96, you got the LT4 as part of the deal. :D

I am pretty sure you could have gotten the 97 SS Camaro with the LT4. It would be the white one with the hugger stripes, and it also had to be a manual I believe. The Pontiac Firehawks of that year had LT4s in them as well.

Also, I think all the LT4 F-bodies were hardtops (no T-tops or verts).
