1984 Vet, 75,000 miles. While driving at approx. 75 mph a loud rapid clanking noise sounding like it was coming from the trans area. This clanking noise continued till I pulled over and stooped the car. While on the side of the road, put the trans back into Drive and the clanking noise clanked slowly as I moved forward.
Stooped the car and put the trans in Reverse and moved slowly backward
with no noise. Now, selecting Drive again and pulling forward, there was no
noise, I pulled slowly back on the the road and ended up resuming normal hwy speed with no further noise. I drive this car regularly and have never heard this noise again until yesterday, exactly the same thing, after selecting Reverse and then again Drive, received no further noises and resumed regular hwy speeds. Universal joints were checked and are ok. I cant rule out rear end as the noise was hard to pin point.
Does anyone have any experience in this area, I think the trans is original and is a 4x2. Many thanks, great site for great information. Dave..
It might be a craked flexplate, pull the inpection cover and use a flexplate tool (or a prybar) to crank it around by hand(not in park) and try to pry the edge of the flexplate away from the converter in spots around the perimeter as yo look for cracks . Youll see it if its bad. Its an easy enuff check, worth a shot. I hope its something simple. :steering:
