Default 6sp shifter movement?

I know to expect some movement out of the shifter when you get on it in first. My question is how much is to much? It's not like it's hitting the roof :jester . It just seems to be moving quite a bit here recently. Maybe a 1/2" up in first?

The stock shifter is very sloppy, mine moves around in all gears.(except reverse.

Mine did exactly the same thing when I bought it last summer. It turned out that the C-beam bolts had loosened up, allowing the tranny to rotate upward when torque was applied. Some (if not all) of the load that's usually carried by the C-beam was being carried by the transmission's output shaft bushing. Re-tightening the C-beam bolts eliminated the up/down movement of the stick, but the damage to the bushing and rear seal was costly to repair. :cry

You may have an unrelated problem, but my advice is to not drive it (or drive it very easily) until you figure out what's going on.

I had this problem also. and being my first vette i had no idea what was expected. my tranny was loose - all the bolts were about to fall out. now that i have them tight again i can say NO MOVEMENT AT ALL, ROCK SOLID!
get your bolts checked :)
good luck
