Can someone who replaced their carpet tell me how the factory carpet is attached? Is it glued or just lays there? Also, is it the same for the cargo area? I'm thinking of replacing mine but I would like to know what's involved in this restoration. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.
Carpet on the floors just lays there, carpet on the transmission tunnel is glued and probably the worst pieces to replace. The pieces on the door sills and lower door panels is also glued but not as bad to replace as the tunnel pieces. Rear hatch area is I remember correctly also is just laying there. Oh yeah, the pieces on the lower dash (both sides) is also glued, these fall into being better than the tunnel pieces to install but worse than the door sills.
Of course the seats will need to come out.
Depending on the carpet you use (mass back or fabric), spray on adhesives may not work. When I replaced mine I found hot glue worked much better than spray because the mass back is pretty stiff and the spray just won't hold it.
Take your time and it will come out looking great.
I just replaced the front and back carpetting in my '84. Tips: purchase MASS BACK. Use spray adhesive made for auto carpetting (parts stores have it for about $12 per can. You need 1 can), I got a GREAT GREAT deal on carpetting...ready...Front and back mass back set for $378.00!!! Go to ebay and find the user ID: parts4corvettes
