Hey guys, i asked u for help a while ago on the problems my 86 vette was having. Most of the responses u posted told me that i needed to put an O2 sensor in. Since then, i have put it in and i haven't noticed much of a change in the car @ all... So now we're back to square one. When my service engine soon light comes on, the car barely runs, sometimes backfires, and is somewhat embarrassing. As soon as the light turns off (VERY RARELY), the car runs perfect again. Sometimes the light flickers on and off to tease me. When i try to get a readout from the OBD nothing happens. The service engine soon light stays on and never blinks 3 times to show me that diagnostics mode is starting up. Someone said to check for a vaccum leak, but i doubt that's the problem because when that light turns off, it runs as if there was never a problem. Any new suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem?
I had the same problem in my 86. I checked the codes and it gave me the mem-cal error. I think that was code 54?? All I did was replace the ECM and chip, and all the problems went away. total $250.00
Here's a test someone else posted once to determine wether your ecm is bad; run your car at an idle and tap on your ecm with a knuckle, if tapping effects idle then it is bad. I thought it was kind of silly when I heard it...but tapped on the old one and idle stumbled, tapped on the new one and nothing happened...
Is the ECM the same thing as the ECU? I have an aftermarket chip in there, it's never given me problems (more than a year). But i kept the old one so maybe i need to put it back in? Where's the "ECM" so i can tap it?
