why is it so hard? she wants $4000 for the '84 with a slipping trans, 65,000 miles, and a salvage/flood car title. but why can't i just say i don't want it and walk away?
:( this car is all i can think about, it's on my mind all the time now. so hard to pass up corvettes.... :cry
so, any of you got any stories of cars you just couldn't walk away from?
Mr Mojo--the car is about 140 feet down the street here at 60 acres. i would hate myself if i pass this up and it is good, but then again i don't wanna regret the purchase forever either.
if you have any spare time whenever, i would surely appreciate your expertise in this area. i really do need an impartial eye to look at it...and a knowledgeable one wouldn't be bad either :chevy
so yes, if you wouldn't mind a quick trip to 60 acres, then i would love to have your opinion. let me know if you have the time...if not, don't worry about it. thanks either way
Think with you're head! No, not that one. :jester It's easy to get caught up in your emotions. Step back for a moment and ask yourself, "is this what I 've been looking for?". Be patient!!! The perfect one will come along. :yesnod:
I agree with stinger, never buy a Corvette unless it is exactly the one you want. I wanted a 6 spd but bought the first Vette I looked at, an auto :cry
I'd walk away from that. Trans repair and possible problems related to the car being in a flood; the cost of those repairs on top of the $4,000 for the car could probaby buy you an '84 or an '85 that is mint and doesn't have a history. Have I walked away from buying cars? Yes, many. It does require good discipline, but you've got to look at the "big picture." The big picture being your future with the car. One car I did have a hard time walking away from though was a 1996 Corvette Collectors Edition Coupe, LT4. It had 18,000 miles on it. I looked closer and noticed the hood didn't line up with the doors, and the doors were scraped up on the edges by the hood. I looked closer and under the hood and could tell the frame was shot. He wanted $15,000. I walked away even though it's an LT4 it was still a car with a bent frame and didn't drive right.
Think of it this way, it's like picking up a girl, if you don't succeed; there's plenty of fish in the sea.
Yup... As much as I ADORE my `84 (family history & color, as well as the 1st C4, etc), if you want to be ahead of the game... Wait it out for a later model 6 spd (`86+). You may pay another $1500 or so for it, but in the long haul it will be more dependable (lower miles / better condition), more fun and more responsive (6 spd, no slush box), and easier to MOD (you know you will, don't deny it! :D ).
Had I not grown up with my metallic gold `84 automatic and just put mondo cash into a new stroker, etc... that's what I would do. And I honestly think it's the smart play.

Note: I'm in no way saying the crossfire can't make HP... but we all know it's comparitively a PITA to a TPI.
I once bought a salvage CJ-7 at a steal of a price ( they stole my money as it turned out). It was once stolen and parked in a lake. With all the money i put into it I could have bought a new one. With the Vettes and their more complicated electrical systems you may never get it to run right. Then when you try to sell it you will find it is very difficult to sell a salvage car. Does the engine run? I see many non-salvage vettes in the local Auto Trader in the $5000 price area without being a salvage car. I walked from nicer cars because there were major questions and no clear answers. There are many good cheap cars out there. Walk away!!!!
Man, I must have walked away from a good dozen vettes before finding the "right one". And I was lucky that I did:
We had driven 75 miles one miles one morning to look at yet another vette that was advertised in the paper and was nothing like advertised when we arrived... It was about the 12th one and just when I was about to give up my dad (who is a huge vette nut) saw one in the paper in the same area we were in. It was an '88 with 28,000 original miles, and I bought her that day!!!!
So, as you can guess, the moral of the story is: "wait for the right one" or something like that.

Re: walk away (92Z)
Walk away. I know how you're feeling. I wanted to buy the first Corvette I looked at, even though it was in bad shape and overpriced.
Months/years of regret and spending aren't worth giving into your emotions today. Do yourself a favor, and look at more vettes. I guarantee you, this one will still be for sale later, if not by the original owner, by the next owner who's sick of it already.
When I went to buy my first muscle car, I pretty much ended up with the first one I saw. A 1976 Trans-Am 455. Cool car, but I ended up paying too much for a car that would require too much work to make it worth while. But I fell in love with the sound and the fury. I had to look at a lot of 'Vettes and make a lot of phone calls before I found the one I'm driving now, and I'm glad I did it. Sure, it can be hard, but just tell yourself it'll be wroth it in the end. Trust me, there are a lot of 84s out there in that price range that aren't salvaged.
I bought my first and current vette off my step-father as soon as I heard he was going to sell it. Before then I had driven it about a dozen times so I was hooked.
Mr Mojo--

Thats the reason I would never even call to look at an auto... because I know I wouldnt be able to pass it up if it was a god deal.... Never went to look at an aauto.... ever... I needed the 6 speed
YESSS...alright people, i was able to finally say to myself "there are better vette's than that one around here", so i have decide to pass on this '84. took a TON of willpower, but i was able to call her up and say i am no longer interested.
now i gotta go get workin on my '79...it was overheating today in the 90+ temperatures. :smash: :smash: :smash:
