Default Dashboard lights question

1985 Corvette Coupe. In have noticed that when I start the engine in the driveway at night, in the dark, with the headlights off, the dashboard lights are brighter than during the day. When I back the car into the lighted garage, the dashboard lights dim, like it's daylight outside. I have four shop lights in my garage, so it's almost like daylight in the garage. When I drive back outside into the dark night the dashboard lights get bright again. Did they have light sensors in 1985? I didn't think that they had such features in 1985, but the dashboard lights seem to respond to outside darkness and brightness. If they did have this feature, where is the sensor located? I showed my wife and she could see the change in the dashboard lights each time I drove in and out of the lighted garage, so I know I'm not hallucinating.

Look at the top left side of your instrument cluster. You should see a little cutout about a 1/4 inch square. That my friend, is your light sensor. If you are sitting in the car in pitch black with the lights off, the dash cluster should be very dim, until you turn your lights on. The light sensor works off ambient light. (whatever that is) That's why the early C4's were called the most technologicly advanced cars in the world. They had so many neat little gadgets!!
