Well I dont know about the FX3 breaking at 60k miles (I have never heard that one before) I do know that can be an expensive item to repair. New shocks run about $200 each and the controller that sits on top of each shock is about the same.
Personally I would not buy a car solely on its having the FX3 option, I would be looking at the overall package and in your case, which was in better condition or was a better value. I had pretty much made up my mind to adopt mine, when I saw that it was a Z07 car, that finalized my decision.
It probably doesnt help but its my $0.02 worth
I've got FX3 on my 90 with 108K miles on it and never have had a problem with it (knock on wood...).
I really look at it as more of a novelty than anything else. Around town, where I do most of my driving, it really doesn't do anything.
However, it is nice to have when cruising on the interstate when I flip it over to "Tour" and it smooths out the ride.
The FX-3 Screwed up on my car before I bought it. The Dr I bought it from took it to the dealer for everything, including new tires  Anywho, he had the ride control fixed after the light came on. I have every receipt to everything done. It cost him $2k to fix. The car has spanking new shocks and everything...BTW the car only has 20k on it.
Let's put it this way........My car didn't have it when I bought it.......guess what ? It has it now, I installed it and it a whole different car now. Around town you'll notice slight differences, on the highway and in cornering there is a night and day drivability difference. Yes it can get costly to repair but that is what THIS FORUM is all about. Outright the system runs around $3600 to install from GM I did it for around $1100 and that's including the shock rebuild from Bilstein. Good and bad should be changed to GREAT!
Actually, every time you start an FX3 equiped car, the actuators move so that the computer can tell the system is working properly. Don't feel as though you are going to ware it out by switching modes. Use it

And it also adjusts based on vehicle speed, so the actuators are basically always moving anyway.
I have FX3 on my '90 and I think it's the best and most useful option on the car.
I usually keep it in Sport, but I change settings a lot and you can definitely feel the difference. It adds so much flexibility. Performance setting is unbelievable; just the way a sports car should feel.
When I hit 62k on my 92, I swapped out the FX3 for Edelbrock IAS shocks & the car never handled as well as it does now. Don't make your decision solely on the FX3 option. Drive both & listen very carefully . . .
IF ONE OF THEM IS BLACK, GET THAT ONE!
