My '86 does the same thing. It's like it wants to take off. Mine doesn't even have a shift kit.

Mine too - it shifts very solidly into drive. 37K no rebuild.

oops - I forgot to post my original comment. My 84 also idled high right after I bought it and the cure was simply re-attaching a vacuum hose.
