Default Changing Plugs and Wires

I am changing the plugs and wires on my 84. Is thier anything in particular that I should know about before I start?

I've only seen one L83 and don't remember much about the routing so allI'll say is to label each wire at each end to avoid the possible fun of trouble-shooting a swap later (don't ask how I know :bb).

Oh, you might check the condition of the dist cap & rotor; it might be time for a replacement.

I would definitely check the distributor cap and rotor, in fact if I were changing wires, I would go ahead and change the cap and rotor at the same time. Nothing to make the task especially difficult...

I've never closely examined an 84 under the hood so I don't know how hard it is to get at the plugs. I know on the LT1 you can save a lot of time by removing the driver's side wheel well, then you'll have a straight shot right at the plugs.

Does anyone recommend lifting the car up to get to the number 4 cylinder on the driver side? It looks like it may be difficult to get to.

I just did a tuneup on an 84. I found it pretty easy. The passenger side is more difficult that the driver side, so you may want to start on the drivers side to get warmed up. I didn't do anything from underneath, but it might help to have a "universal" type attachment for your rachet, especially when you're trying to get to numbers 6 and 8. Regarding hooking up the wires correctly on the distributor cap, you should have a ring that goes over the distributor cap that tells you where each wire goes, otherwise, just do them one at a time so they don't get mixed up, or refer to a repair manual which shows you the firing order. I replaced plugs, wires, ignition module and whatever the thing is the module plugs into, replaced the coil in the top of the distributor cap with an Accel high output, replaced the distributor cap and rotor. All together made a big difference. Since then I've rebuild the throttle bodies and that really made a difference - then replaced the fuel pump and things got even better. None of this was hard. Happy to offer advice if you get stuck.
