i have noticed that there is a little tiny square to the top-left of my speedo on my '84 digital dash...it looks like there is a light in there, but it has never come on, and i have no idea what it does..just wanted to see if anyone knows about it..thanks! :)
Re: digital dash question--what is this? (Ramanstud)
The little square window on the left side of the dash, about 1/4"X1/4" is your sensor that tells the dashboard lights how dark it is outside, so that the lights will adjust and be easier to see. You can test it by putting your finger over the hole or moving your finger near the hole to see if your dashboard lights get brighter or darker. I just found out a few weeks ago, myself. I noticed that each time I pulled into and out of our well lit garage at night, the dashboard lights would dim.

Supposed to be a light sensor - change your readout brightness for day or night. Have one in mine that does not change the light intensity but the dash works so I call it good enough. :yesnod: :steering:

nice, i have noticed that it gets brighter at night. thanks
:skep: Hmmmm...when I put my headlights on my dash goes dimmer, which makes sense since it should be brighter during daylight so you can see it and less blinding at night. Turning the headlight **** also adjusts the brightness. Never knew there was a sensor at all!

:iagree: I always adjusted the level manually. Never noticed the brightness change at all automatically.

That little square is your ambient light sensor, and it works very well, or at least mine does, and it should even work at night with your lights on. A good way to test how well it is working is as follows:
1. Daytime---Dash should be well lit.
2. Nightime (Full Dark)---With lights off, your cluster lights should be barely visible.
3. Nightime with lights on----Dash lights at normal brightness, pull into a very brightly lit gas station or something like that, and your dash lights should get even brighter still. :seeya
