OK guys i am planning on taking my LT4 to the track somtime in the near future. my problem is that while i can shift better than most ppl i know i cant launch worth anything i always eaither bog or just sit there and spin my expensive tires. i know that 99% of it just comes down to personal practice with your machine but i was curious what rpm some of you are launching at and what technique do you use? i have an LT4 like i said so i dont know if i need to launch at a different rpm than a guy with a LT1 or L98. i really am clueless about most of this. thanks for any input here guys i really appreciate it
you gotta just experiment with diferent rpm drops. hold it at like 2000 rpm's then let the clutch out quickly(but don't drop it). i don't know if that will work, but you have to play around with it. try different rpm's. alot of people also try to start in 2nd gear, you might be able to get a better launch like that.
i live about 25 minutes away from gainesville, if you're going out wednesday night for test n tune i'll go out there. gainesville's a great track, my best run was right after a 8 second dragster ran, i did my burnout, pulled right on his tracks and launched like hell. what color is your vette? i'll be driving my maroon s10 out there, the vette's covered in the garage let me know if you're going this week or saturday or what.
Justin
thanks but i dont think i will be running this week
but in case you see me out there in the future my vett is black on black 96 LT4. i want to practice launching a little bit in the streets before i totally embarass myself at the track. im running a bad optispark as well with no mods
so if when i do go i see a mid 13 i will be more than happy
LOL Frank, that .027sec realy isn't so "scant" is it? Well, at least you didn't post that "other" pic. :bb
Anyway, practice your launch on the street is a good idea but remember that launching on the strip is another breed of animal. You still need to feather the clutch (or roll into the throttle with an A4) but, on street tires, but the launch will also depend on track conditions.
Be sure to stage up in the rubber tracks of other drivers. That way you take advantage of the rubber laid down without running slicks. The difference can easily be a 10th of so in short time and more in ET.
As a fellow LT4 owner who can't launch worth sh*! I would try from idle. I have problems with launching at 2000 rpm with these cars. I easily bog or spin. Feathering the clutch so far has not worked and produces terrible 60 ft times, and lots of wear on the clutch. Practice, practice, practice...
well its a little more comforting to know i am not the only one in the world with a fast stock car that cant launch. i dont consider myself a bad driver i can shoft faster than most of my friends and i can do fairly decent in a aoutocross i just never have perfected the whole feathering the throttle thing to actually launch..... i know how to do a killer burnout and melt away 200 dollar tires! but i just cant get it to bite
