Default Shifter **** Removal

How do I remove the shifter **** on my 91 automatic?
I want to replace the shifter boot. Thanks :steering:

Pry the button off with a screwdriver (carefully) then look down the button shaft, there is a round retaining clip at the bottom interior of the **** (I said **** :lol: ) Use a screwdriver to spread this retainer loose and the **** will lift right off.

I agree, but with one difference. The retaining clip is designed to be removed with a snap ring plyers. It is well worth picking one up for 5 or 10 bucks. It should have a couple heads with it, use the one that spreads when you close the handles. It makes it a lot easier.
