Default Do it Yourself !

A few weeks ago I replaced the thermostat in my LT1. And so far it seems to be runing fine. I refused to spend $300 or so for some retard to put in a $20 part. This way I know it's done right ! It took some time to get it done but I don't miss the frustration of paying way to much for a simple job. The following weekend I installed the J55 brake setup which was a true bold on job (Unlike many bolt ons I've done before!) My brother helped with that and it now stops much quicker. I also saved quite a bit of money buying used parts for the brake setup from a Forum member. Corvette folks are allways helpful and seem to look out for each other. Just thought I'd share some encouragement with my fellow Corvette fans. Upgrades rock ! :hurray:

Oh, you are soooo right!!!!!!

Last weekend, I did a transmission oil change (ZF6), oil change, turned the front rotors and replaced the front wheel hubs.

I did all that for about $375.00... I would hate to think what my local Chevy dealer woulda soaked me for, more than likely, about $1000.00!!!!!!!

The week before that was the alternator. It went south... $135.00 for the part, DIY install, and BAM! I save $150.00!!!

These cars are much easier to work on than people think.

I do absolutely everything I can myself. I've had too many cars come back from the shop in worse condition than they went in. Example: in for rear diff service, out with hosed-up alignment. :cuss

The other day while I was crawling around under my car swearing, a guy came up and said "I didn't think Corvette owners worked on their own cars". My somewhat sharp reply; "when you own one of these, you can't afford not to."

Those who can, do. Those who can't, pay.

Many consumers go to their mechanics and say "make it go away". Their solution has to be the 100% one. It is usually very expensive. If you do it yourself you can work the problem incrementally and save lots of money.

There is nothing more frustrating than paying to have the job done right and then have a problem. If you screw it up yourself you can always punish yourself with beer.

Absolutely. Few mechanics will work on your car like its their own. I get the satisfaction when doing a job that I have cleaned parts before putting them back on, applied the correct amount of fluids & such, torqued properly, use new parts and choose the manuf. and best of all, go to the forum for the best advice & experience :yesnod:
