My friend has a '86 with over 120K on the motor. The car is (motorwise) bone stock, and for the most part he wants to keep it that way.
The engine is starting to have some issues (burning oil, leaks, etc) which are fairly typical for a motor of that age and that many miles.
The question is;
1: Rebuild the motor
or
2: Purchase a new motor.
I really don't have an answer but maybe some of the more experienced pro's might. He lives on Long Island, so I guess he could use the Vette Doctors, but he wants some info first.
Id have it machined into a 383, a forged crank, PM rods, hyper pistons. Id also try to get rid of the stock heads, which suck, for some 88-91 vette heads.
I guess it depends on whether he wants a bone-stock rebuild or is interested at all in a performance upgrade. Plus a budget.
Depending on your ultimate horsepower goal... factory crate short blocks are a pretty good deal.
If you plan to go with something wilder then there are some good packages out there. Some people may tell you to do it all yourself, but when you do the "true" numbers a package deal is hard to beat.
