The answer is relative to how much money you want to spend. I used to bust the cheap Monroe shoccks on my 84 about every 6 months and Monroe would replace them free of charge, but that left me doing the change out. I have KYB shocks on my 84 now and they have held up very well. I have Koni adjustable shocks on my 86. They are a much better shock, but much more costly. Your 84 is going to ride stiff regardless of what shock you put on it as the 84 had the stiffest spring rates of all the C4's. GM softened them up a bid due to complaints from customers, but your 84 will run well on an auto x corse. If you are looking for a softer ride, you will need to change out the springs. GOod Luck

I use the Koni adjustables....bit pricey....but worth the $$$$$$$$$$$$$
