I live in Michigan just NW of Detroit. I would like to take my car to some sort of road course. I would like to drag race as well but I really like the turns more I think.
Question is where do I start? I don't know anything about going about this kinda stuff. Are there places that let you run your car on their track? Like a open track day? Should I just start calling around to diffrent tracks in the aera?
I would like to see what my car can do. But I would rather not try it out on soome public road. Any tips would be welcome. Or maybe I should just stick to trying to drag race...
There are a number of tracks that do allow, some sort of driving in the track without having to be setup for full racing. You just need to start calling around the the road courses in your area.
I only know of two that allow it, one here in Oklahoma the other in Calif. But am sure that several others do allow it, based on driver experience and local associations.
Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, near Tulsa, OK has a HST (high speed touring) that allows street cars, high performance types, on the track under very controled situations. Even have transponders and timing devices you can use.
Check with your local SCCA or Corvette club. Our club holds a high speed driving school at Pocono every year and have numerous autocross events throughout the year. Most events will have you run with a instructor for your first time on a high speed event. They are alot of fun.
Post this over in Great Lakes and you'll get plenty of responses as well. There's a group there from the North / East side that gets together and hits a lot of (somewhat local) tracks like Waterford, Gingerman, Mid-Ohio etc. They would be a good group to hook up with the first time you go.
These are all the dudes in our area. You can also get there by selecting (from the menu bar above) Forums --> Upcoming Events and Regional Discussion --> Great Lakes
There are a lot of good events that the North and East siders put together. Being downriver, I usually have a bit of a drive. Come out and meet the group!
