Asked this on the tech s ide and only got one hit. So, I'll try on this side. Tried the A/c for the first time, don’t work. I have 12 volts at the green and black wire at the connector going into the compressor. If I plug the connector back in, I hear a change in the engine, but the compressor won’t start. The inside fan is on and running. Is there a relay for the A/C ?. I used an ohm meter and the three switches on the A/C lines, one on the low and two one the high are closed. Could it be low on gas ? Or does it sound like the compressor. Thanks for any help.
Just checked the thread in tech. If you've got power to the compressor clutch and it doesn't pull in, it might be defective. I'd jumper it directly off the battery to be sure. You don't even have to have the motor running, it will pull in with a clank if it's working.
Depending on the compressor model, sometimes it's not too hard to replace just the clutch. That way you don't have the added expense of replacing the entire compressor, receiver/dryer, pumping down the system and recharging it.
It sounds to me like a defective AC clutch. Probably the Coils in the clutch have an open in them. The only real problem is that is an R-12 refridgerant instead of today's cheaper R-134a. So if it is the clutch, take it to an AC shop to have them suck out the refridgerant. Then fix the compressor and have the shop put in your R-12.
OK, I’ll try the jumper tomorrow. I did ohm out the two leads going into the compressor and it did show continuinty. With my luck lately, it will be the compressor. Thanks for the reply
