Question about 4+3 Vette
Hello,
I have been looking at a new 2003 Zo6 or C5 but found a 86 C4 with 1200 miles but it has the 4+3 transmission. Is this good or bad compared to the 6 speed? It looked like there were 4 gears and can only guess it has 3 overdrives or something built inbetween gears. Obviously new to this. I am a camaro lover by heart but want my dream car...a vette. Thanks,
Jim K.

Re: Question about 4+3 Vette (wxerman)
The 4+3 is a a 4 speed with overdrive for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I only use the O/D when I'm in 4th and going over 50mph. Basically use it like a 5 speed.
This is the only manual transmission that came in the 86. i'd prefer a 6 speed but the 4+3 isn't bad. Also, it's hard to compare a 03 zo6 to an 86 l98 based on the transmission. These cars are completely different animals.

Re: Question about 4+3 Vette (86_RedRider)
It's a Super T10 with a planetary 2-speed overdrive (.68:1 or .60:1)unit behind it. The computer locks out 1st gear overdrive except on down shifts from 2ndOD.
Go for the 6-speed, even though they are noisier, and wayy more expensive to rebuild, it'll be more reliable, and withstand more abuse. Most problems people have with the 4+3 are small electronic goofs with the switches, but there are some noted design flaws I've read about on the 86E and earlier units.
One very cool thing about it, is I can be cruising in 4th+OD, and when I want to pass someone, I just floor it, and the od downshifts automatically. The OD is also nice if you're on a road that puts you right in between two gears (traffic, or hills). You can use the OD function instead of shifting back and forth.

Thanks for the info. I apologize for being vague. Wasn't really trying to compare a ZO6 and a C4, just providing info. Thanks for the gouge though.

Re: Question about 4+3 Vette (wxerman)
When I got my '85, I was told to slap a 6spd in mine. But after driving it for a while, I've grown attatched to it. In town, I just use the strong 4spd. But on the hwy, all 7 speeds are sweet! And like someone said, punch it, the OD kicks out and the 4 speed takes over and ...... :steering:
