itty-bitty mufflers..
I just installed oval stainless exhaust tips. In the process, I SawZall'ed the LT1-type muffler tips off my LT4 and was amazed to discover that the stock muffler's outlet (and inlet, too) is barely 2" I.D.
Now, the pipes themselves are closer to 2.75"...I am amazed at GM for putting these mufflers on the car.
I can't help but think that aftermarket mufflers with 3" inlet/outlets would be more effective and am surprised that remarkable power gains aren't common.
Am I missing something here?
Most of the aftermarket cat-back systems give just a little over 10 hp gain.
Per http://www.corsaperformance.com, they state that the catalytic-converters on vettes offer signficant restriction such that 10 hp is about the max gain you can get from cat-back systems.
Which leads to the next question of what HP gains can be made by using high-flow cats.
