In the mid eighties I saw in several catalogs a glove/storage box device that was an exact fit for that worthless protrusion from the dash in front of the passenger. It even had a flush fitting door that was finished same as the dash or with wood grain to match many of the wood grain interior sets that were being sold at that time.
I'd like to remove the worthless protrusion that looks like it was designed for an air bag and install one of theseGlove/Storage box units in its place.
?Any of you experts know where I might find one of these units??
Also ... on the same general topic ... what's a source for the flat cover that can replace that "bread loaf" (as I've heard it referrred to)? I've dug around thru some of the more popular aftermarket parts websites and have yet to find anything.
It does seem to me that a functioning glove box would be more useful ... as long as it didn't have wood grain on it
WOW! You sure responded fast. I've seen the breadboard type that Ecklers has (MidAmerica also has one at the same price)
What I'm hoping to find looks like these but also has a small storage area behind the breadboard that is hinged and functions like a regular glovebox door. Either my old memory is playing tricks on me again, or someone fabricated their own hinges/storage box behind the breadboard, or there really was one complete assembly sold in the mid eighties.
I guess should count my blessings. It's nice to have nothing to worry about in life except stuff from the past that you NOW think you want or need.
Bil Happy Fourth!l :flag
I'm addicted to this forum :D Actually, I'm tracking the topic thru the email!

I would *love* to find something like that.

Having recently acquired my '89 (and all the complex and expensive problems that came with it), this is low on my priority list ... but how could anybody pass up an opportunity for such functionality?
I was actually thinking about getting my dad to help me pull off the bread loaf and hollow it out and put a hinge on the bottom of and and a clip on the top, so it would in essence become a swing-down glove box. Then I said F it, it's too much work.
Edit: Not just the bread loaf, but the surrounding piece of dashboard too, for support. I'm not sure though, it's been a couple of weeks since I've been in my car (1984), is the dash around the loaf one piece? From what I can remember, there is a square piece around the loaf.
If you hollowed it out, wouldn't everything fall out when you closed it?
Anyway, you're not imagining things. Ecklers use to have a glove box like you mentioned. I talked to a guy on Ebay about it. It is no longer available from them, however, if it helps, the guy said it was a real pain to install and it was really cheaply made. He said if he had it to do over, he wouldn't. He also mentioned it was difficult to reach and was easier to use the console or rear storage.
Just my $0.02 :seeya
