I got my license reminder today, and it says that I need to get a smog check at a test-only station. Now here's the big problem, I think there's a hose off somewhere on the vaccum / emissions system - swo I think it's going to fail big time. Also, my cruise control stopped working (vaccum controlled?), and my heater too.
Inside the engine bay, I see the following connector with the end open where another pipe should probably go (see pic). Does anyone know what should connect here, and where I should try and find it (can't see any unconnected hoses in the area).
I think this may be specific to the California emissions control system.
Test only means that you failed before?
Have the car pre-checked at a regular test station, pipe test only.
If it fails have them correct the problem. Test only does no repairs.
The use of smog control systems on cars started in 1966 but the air is still getting worse?
Keep digging, find the missing hose. If you don't, it might cost you $50 to $100 bucks for a shop to do a diagnostic and to hook the hose up. A shop I went to failed my car for a vaccuum leak and they wanted $70 for a diagnostica to find out where the leak was. Funny, it wasn't leaking when I took it there. I drove the car across the street and found the disconnected line and was back in the shop in 5 minutes and the car passed.
The "smog only" shop is a good thing. They only fail you if you deserve it. Since they can't fix it, there is no money in "creating a failure". But they will fail you if you deserve it.
Even if your car passes the pipe sniffer, it may fail the visual. I think they also check the vaccuum lines. Get it fixed before you go.
The air down here in SoCal is much cleaner than it was when I arrived in '87. our Vettes prove you can have clean air and performance.
