My Keyless Entry system has been on the fritz for a while now. My transmitter no longer will unlock doors/pop the hatch (96 coupe), or even allow me to turn off the system. I have even replaced the battery in the remote and it still won't work.
Now, every so often, the Keyless Entry Light will come on and stay on. I can't figure it out.
Any ideas on how to fix the PKE and my light problem? Is this a known glitch with the 96 Vette ?
Start from scratch and reprogram your transmitter. First, check the PKE fuse, then proceed with the programming. Due to so many active frequencies flying around, sometimes the memory in your receiver gets scrambled. If re-programming doesn't work, then you have a problem with either your transmitter or receiver. Hope it's not the transmitter, GM charges about $144 for a new one. In the factory manual, there are diagnostic prcedures you can follow (with codes flashing on the PKE light) to help you troubleshoot. Every Corvette owner should own a GM factory manual! Expensive, yes. But priceless when it comes to troubleshooting your Corvette. I see questions every day on the forum that the answer for is in the manual. This is not a sermon (well, maybe a little one). I've been driving Corvettes since the 60's and I have saved thousands of dollars through the use of my manuals.
I think it could be the receiver, not the transmitter. One problem I have had was that that hatch would just POP by itself while driving around town. This is not supposed to happen, but did. Luckily only at 30 mph.
If it is the receiver, what would that cost be? Any idea ?
I had a bad receiver, which resulted with the dash light being lit continuously. The receiver is buried under the dash cap, behind the heater controls and radio. It's a PITA to replace - the upper dash pad has to come out, but you can take a short cut by cutting out the plastic panel behind the radio with a dremel. I didn't want to hack up the dash support, so I did mine the hard way.
I believe that retail on the part is ~$200, but GMPartsdirect or Superior Chevrolet will probably give a decent discount.
