For those of you experiencing difficulty with the 1 to 4 shift lock-out, or for those of you who wish to experience shifting through all your six gears, here is a simple fix: on the passenger side, just in front of the fire wall, and mounted on the fender well, is a relay, that when disconnected, will disable the 1 to 4 lock-out allowing you a very smooth shift transition through all 6 gears. Simply locate the correct relay (your shop manual will identify it); disconnect the relay; place a piece of styrofoam between the connections to prevent electrical contact and moisture absorbtion; reconnect the relay onto the fender well clip.
Just remember that you will always display an error code during a diagnostic check, so alert the technician, if your vette is in for repair, to disregard that error code for the 1 to 4 lock-out.
I have two problems.....1) I do not have a manual, can anyone tell me or send me a picture of where th relay he is speaking about actually is? 2) Do I need a plug to disable it or can I just unplug it like the tip suggests?
Any help will be appreciated....this skip shift is killing me! Thanks!
Ecklers sells a CAGS eliminator for the LT1 6-speeds for $12. It will take a couple minutes to get under the car to install it. I would rather mess with that then the relay. Under the car on the driver's side of the transmission is a cable with a connector. You can basically unplug the connector and the CAGS will be eliminated. The kit just allows you to save the connectors from corrosion and has a tie wrap to keep the wire from hanging. I recently did this on my 95 vert and the only complaint I had was that I waited 10 months to do it.
Get the CAGS eliminator. No warning lights and the disconnected parts are protected from moisture and dirt. Takes about 2 minutes to install (after jacking, that is). Don't crawl under there with only a jack holding it up.

Well I don't have any warning lights on, and I figure .02 cents of electrical tape does the same thing as a $16 connector. It would end up costing me about $40 with exchange, shipping, taxes, etc, etc. No problems so far....
When I said manual "oldman" I was refering to the owner's service manual! All of the owner's manuals and any service manuals were not with my car when I purchased it last week!
Just don't shift until you hit 20 MPH, problem solved.
That works, unless you have a 157 year old woman in front of you in a Ford Escort, and you'd like to blow by her in 2nd, and can't cause you were forced to jump to 4th. I had a problem with it only because I like to control when I shift, not when GM FEELS I should be shifting... Best $10-15 I've spent!!
On your ECM, A connector block (gray tab) disconnect A-9, the white wire (circuit 375). This controls the dash one to four indicator light. On connector block B (red tab) disconnect B-2, the dark blue wire (circuit 1493). This controls the solenoid at the transmission. Remove these wires and pins from the connector. It's easy to reconnect
