By the way,I did run the B&M and I liked the all the time hard shifts.....For drag applications the B&M is a quick and easy kit. For street I would recommend the transgo

What you said makes perfect sense. I guess the reason mine does not shift so hard it knocks my head off is that the guy who built my tranny altered the valve body quite a bit...I trust his work as he builds everything from street trannys to drag trannys that support over 1500hp. So if my valve body were stock I would have to worry about shortening the tranny life?

A couple of things:
Whenever you rebuild a tranny...it's usually common practice to put a new torque converter in so the gunk inside the old one doesn't contaminate the new rebuild. So...if they(and I hope they do) replace it, go ahead and get a 2400 stall....I put one in mine and love it.

As far as the kit...I too went with Transgo....and as everyone has said....it really shouldn't but more burden on your drivetrain.....also, when they put the shift kit in...there will be a choice of three degrees of shifting they can put in. Softer shifts...medium shifts...or hard shifts. Most people like the medium shifts....get a nice 1-2 chirp and sometimes 2-3....
Good Luck!

YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT 91,000 MILES!!!???

I bought my '87 with 91,000 miles on her about 6 years ago, the tranny didn't start slipping until I hit it with 100 shot of N20... Did I mention at this point the tranny had about 190,000 miles on it!!!!!!! It still drove nicely under normal driving conditions and I only changed the filter & fluid twice in the previous 100,000 miles.

OK now for the rebuild, I plunked big bucks into the tranny, added a TRANSGO shift kit and a 2200 stall speed converter that was re-worked from a buick grand national. Your mechanic can adjust the cable for how hard you want it to shift. I love it! Mine is set up to shift hard - neck breaking hard. And with all the HP & torque I've actually broke-loose the 2 bolts that hold the torque beam together. - that just had to be re-tightened (twice) Don't forget I'm pushing a little more HP than you... check out my signature for ALL the mods. AND I DIDN'T START BUILDING UNTIL ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO WITH ABOUT 170,00 ON THE CAR! So don't worry about your 91,000 miles, you car is just now broken-in ENJOY IT & HAVE FUN!

 how will higher higher line pressure cause faster wear? The kit can not cause enough pressure to cause bearing wash and besides a transmission isnt lubed like that. The quick shift is created by reducing or eliminating the acculumator volume which acts like a fluid damper allowing slippage through slower engagement of the clutch packs. Eliminating this slippage will reduce heat and wear not increase it.The shock of the hard shift is tough on the sprags and planetary gears but this shock is the same from both kits. The amount of firmness(shock) can be adjustes via the tv cable, changing the shift points up or down by as much as 1500 rpm. :

If you want one more nickles worth: I put in a B&M kit as part of an upgrade, also B&M. The upgrade is great but I do not care for the shift kit. 1-2 shift is harsh no matter how easy you feather the accelerator. Not bad for the track but a major PIA in traffic. 2-3 is firm but not objectionable. 3-4 is like silk. Have the Transgo put, you will not be sorry.

I had a TransGo like kit installed last year with the tranny rebuild. That was with 112k miles on the clock.

If you enjoy spirited driving go with the TransGo shift kit.

I raced my friend with an 02 TransAm before and he had an auto vs my stick. Man that thing just gripped and downshifted realfast and lit up the tires and took off. I have not experienced it, but from seeing it in action its pretty good.

Just had my tranny done. Shift kit, stage 2, heavy duty everything, 2200 hi stall. While driving normally(Take that how you like) it is smooth as silk, but give it to her and she gets up and boogies. The tranny is now smoother and more stable when shifting than before I had it rebuilt. For the extra few bucks, it's worth it.
