It's under 8 grand but it has alot of miles on it. My question is, are vettes reliable? I have an 02 mustang, and might give it to my mom and buy that vette. Is that a good idea (considering i am a sophomore in college and drive 25 miles on the interstate everyday). Do you think this car will be reliable enough to get me to and from school, or should i wait for a better car?
thanks
-Chris
yes, in my opinion, mine is very reliable.
But if I were you I would find one with less miles on it for a bit more $. I believe you will be happier in the end.
Jeez, give the guy a break. Just because he's in college doesn't mean he shouldn't own a corvette. He asked an opinion about the car, not whether he can afford it. I have a 92. From looking at the ad it appears the owner has addressed several of the big issues (opti, H2O pump, brakes, bearings). The A/C is expensive (I just replaced my compressor and all totaled it cost just over $1000.00). The electrical glitch could be just a loose connection or it may be in the controller. Electrical problems are common both from the heat the car generates as well as it's age. If you have the service manuals though you can usually track the problems down. The 92 was the first year of the LT1 engine. If he has maintained it as he stated the engine has a lot of life left. I would have a mechanic look it over before you decide. I can tell you an 11 year old vette comes with it's own set of problems. I've been fixing things on mine nearly every week. Although it's frustrating I know eventually the the bugs will be worked out. The price is good if the car is in good basic shape. Don't expect a cream puff but I certainly would put this car on my list to consider if it were me.
Thanks alot guys. I don't know what the fvck is wrong with malibu, I didn't expect that kind of crap on this board. I'll make sure I have a good mechanic check out the car before I decide to purchase it. I appreciate the advice you guys have given. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens

1) Jealousy - I wished I could have had a Vette when I was in college
2) I have a sense of humor - Just a little ribbin' never hurt anyone, if your guy's panties are too tight and knotted or you're too self absorbed to have a sense of humor yourself.... your life is one big heart attack waiting to happen. Have a beer or find a support group :grouphug:
Now for a serious reply (since I feel guilty after getting flamed for my sarcasm). The advice I'd personally give my own son: Keep the Mustang, you don't want the upkeep costs of an $8000 Vette. Your '02 Stang is going to be a lot less hassle, cost, and upkeep. The vette is 10 yrs older and 100k miles closer to needing repairs. The shock and awe factor with the opposite sex would prolly be higher with a new Stang over an older Vette--the older Vette will look like a hand-me-down. Now the advice I'd give you: You have to decide if you want to put the money and time into caring for an older Vette, if so then don't hesitate. Either way, enjoy.
Sorry about that. If you want things to be taken as a joke on the forum you should use a lot of :jester and maybe some :hat . It's hard to tell sarcasm when you can't hear it...
If I were you I would keep looking. Find one with less miles or just keep the Mustang. A Vette can be just as reliable as any other car, and just like any other car, things start breaking after 100,000 miles. That car will nickel and dime you to death. Just reading his discription in that ad would turn me off to that car. It already has a few problems and it will just get worse.
good luck :seeya
I agree with a poster, keep looking for a better deal, get it checked over REAL good, run a carfax, and definately BUY one if you WANT ONE!!! Gosh, don't wait till your older like I did. Plus, you live in Florida! Now, if you were in MI, you'd be getting a whole different kind of response from people. The car could be reliable, but the snow/ice storms are a whole different story! I say GO FOR IT! Enjoy your life, and enjoy it in a Corvette!
I recently bought my first vette. Its an '89 with 65k miles and I paid 8k for it. Lower mileage cars are out there for about the same price.
I'm not in college, though. I'm 33 yrs old and have 3 other cars to choose from in case something goes wrong with the vette. I also do most maintence and repairs myself (except on the '03 Jeep which is under warranty). BTW, I'm in the military; so, I do not have tons of extra $$$ laying around for repairs or mods. But, I have other options and can let the car set until I can afford the repairs.
Not knowing your financial situation or mechanical abilities, here's my advice: If $$$ is tight or you can't do your own repairs keep the '02 Mustang for the reliability. If $$$ is no object, you can do some of your own work, or you have another transportaion option, go for the VETTE and dump the F'n FORD on Mom! :jester
GOOD LUCK
P.S. -- Look around some more, better cars are out there.
