I have always been afraid of using a claybar. The thought of dragging a hunk of clay across my paint just made me cringe. A friend of mine finally convinced me to try it. What a difference! My paint was great before but now it has more depth and a brighter gloss. Just cleaner I guess.
The claybar kit came with a spray lubricant to use as you wipe with the clay. The instructions said to wash and dry the car first. I found it easier to keep the car soaked with water as you spray the lubricant and wipe with the clay. I am so happy with it I did my wifes Black Grand Am today. It looks like great. Then my daughter came out and wanted to do her car with clay. It looks great.
If anyone has been thinking about trying clay go for it. You will be glad you did. Just keep the clay well lubricated as you rub.
BTW my 88 took a first place trophy at a local show Yesterday ( Saturday) I am very happy about that.

Re: Claybar - what a difference!! (Paul G)
That might be something cool to try... I've always wondered if they're for real. Mothers sell a claybar kit for around $15. Is that the brand that you've used?
I cant wait to do mine. Ive heard many good things about the Mothers clay bar, the only reason I havent bought it is that it is around $15 and for that price I buy other car/tire cleaning junk....Mothers will be used on my car soon...Thats for the info
Paul, if I bring my car up there, will you do it?
You bet! I couple guys in the club want to clay bar and then apply the Zaino to there cars. One guy has a 95 pace car, the other is a 93 Ruby. Lets have a clay bar/Zaino Party.
I got my kit from Hyman auto supply in Chicago. The brand name is "Schlagel" or something like that. I dont think there would be much difference in clay. Next time I am going to order a Zaino clay bar. I just have a lot of faith in Zaino products. I tried there leather treatment this summer. That is good stuff. Smells like new leather and leaves a nice sheen.
Hope you all have better luck than I did. I payed to have mine done at the dealer 2guy's working on it for 3hour's. And yes it look's way better but for 500$ I thought It would look great and alot better. The package was a full detail job ,claybar to. I won't spend 500$ again on it.
I wished it woulda worked on our 98 Grand Prix..being that it's black and it's COVERED in water spots..but that claybar did 100% nothing. :(
You will need to buff your car with a compound that has a mild cut to it. That should take care of the waterspots. If you are not comfortable doing it, a detail shop can easily take care of those water spots. The clay bar will not help you in this instance.
I ordered the clay kit, and souveran wax from Pinnacle last Friday. Can't wait til' they get here so I can get to work!! Hope I have as good of results as you did!!!!!
QUESTION: How often do you need to (should you) use the clay?
The first time I clayed my Vette, I could feel the roughness on the first few swipes of the clay, so I was all happy. So, since my GTA hadn't been waxed in a year, and only got washed twice since November (and sits outside), I figured I'd give it a try. I was surprised that I couldn't feel it picking up anything at all. I did the hood & spoiler and called it quits. I just went right to the wax.
