There are no speakers under the front dash. The covers are there for looks. However I removed my dash and drilled holes through the speaker cover and put in some speakers myself. It was a clean job and looks good.
yes you have to remove the whole dash pad its not that bad there is two screws by the def duct by the windshield and then there are seris of screws under the lip of the dash above the speedometer and bread box as well as two above the center air ducts...once you pull those out the dash pad puls towads you and can be removed ...once offg there is three screws from the underside thatt hold each speaker cover on... take them out and the whole cover pops out...
i just put some infinity kappa 4x6 speakers in mine wow!! sounds great drilled holes and recoverd the old grills with amterial...i just used a really good interior spray adhesive....
If I recall correctly, I did NOT have to remove my dash pad. I took a jewler's flat head screwdriver and pried the fake grills off, then cut them out for 4x6 speakers (I will be replacing them w/ 4x6 plates later), reglued the grill cloth, and pressed it back into the dash pad. Easy!
The trick is getting it back it back in. I highly recomed going with Infinity plate speakers. If you do go with plate spaekers, you'll have to do some modifying to the grills to allow for the bigger magnets to fit iside the dash.
In my '89, they were held in from the bottom by 4 screws so there would be no prying them up without destroying the dash pad.
Also, to my knowledge, Bose equipped cars did not come with dash speakers. If you have them with Bose they may be aftermarket.
I recently took mine out. Removed the dash pad, removed the fake speaker grills, used a dremel tool to cut a speaker opening, and placed new Pioneer 6x4's in there. EASY JOB!
BTW, when cutting the speaker opening with the dremel, I mangled the fabric covering. I sat for about an hour trying to think of a way to replace or repair the speaker covering, when (for some reason) I thought of my wife's legs in black pantyhose. I ran to the corner Walgreens and bought a pair of queen size black women's tights (they're heavier fabric). I shoved the speaker with the grill on into the toe of the pantyhose and cut them off with a pair of scissors. Pulled it tight and held in place with a twist tie. I reinstalled the speaker in the dash, released the twist tie and attached the speaker wire, then reinstalled the dash pad. It looks better than the original. My original black speaker covers had turned blue.
