I have an 89 convertible auto. I currently have it in pieces because of a squeak in the smog pump. Well pulled the belt off and noticed the water pump bushing were complaining so took it off too. Then I've always had a little seepage from the timing chain cover so off it came after I modified a harmonic balancer puller. Then from previous owner the oil pan had a big crease in it so I'm not pulling everything again so off it comes. Well this brings me to my question......
The torque converter cover has an "O" opening where the service manual shows a "U" shaped opening for the starter motor. Which is correct for the automatic tranny?
next question....the oil pan has a rubber gasket, I have a new one but the Haines manual says with rubber no RTV and no mention in the Service manual. Any suggestions?
When I get there I'll probably have to ask you guys how to get the harmonic balancer back on too.
as a general rule, never use silicone (rtv) on rubber.it wont fuse to the rubber and can force the gasket out.
to aid in holding a rubber gasket in place during installation i usually use a small dab of quick dry adhesive like seal-all or trim adhesive in just enough areas to hold the gasket on.or tie it on with flat dental floss through some of the bolt holes then pull the floss out after the bolts are started.
btw,how many miles on that timing chain thats right there for the changing? :)
cant help on the other stuff, aint been there yet.
good luck with her
