Default A/C woes:final chapter

I picked up my Ruby a little while ago. The final tab: $1,776. For what it's worth, the compressor and clutch are guaranteed as long as I own the car. On a technical note, I asked for and was shown the old parts. The old compressor was frozen; the clutch was worn into the wires forming the electromagnet, with torn wires sticking out in every direction. Never saw anything like that before. Luckily the 10 amp fuse blew or It would have probably caught fire! The freon cost was $38 lb (x 3 lbs). Tax on the whole thing was $108. The compressor and clutch amounted to about $1,100, labor was just under $300. Plus some extra stuff. I figure they made about $1,000 profit on the deal! I didn't get kissed but they did wash the car. About ten years ago, I would have tackled the job myself. Advice: don't grow old and stay away from Mr. Greedwrench if at all possible. :mad

That's larceny, pure and simple. I get that feeling any time I pay someone to work on my car, especially dealer service departments, but they always treat A/C like it's some kind of rocket science and charge accordingly.

Thanks to the Montrael Protocol, you can't do R12 yourself anymore, so you're kind of screwed unless you've got...er...alternate resources.
