Default L98 Questions...

Hey guys, I am a newbie here, and I have a couple of questions about the L98 engine. First of all, are there a lot of aftermarket parts available for them? And how about the reliability of the engine?

The reason I am asking these questions is I am in the market for a vette and need to decide whether to get one with the LT1 or the L98. I know a lot about the LT1, thanks to the 97 z28 I currently have, but don't know much about the L98 engine. Any suggestions will be welcome, help me make up my mind. Thanks.

:)

Welcome to the Forum; common advice is to get the newest Vette you can afford.

The L98 is also a reliable engine that's easy to work on and, yes, there are many aftermarket mods available for them.

I suggest you concentrate on getting a clean Vette with the options you realy need and will enjoy.

On the reliability...
My L98 shows 162,300 on the odo, and to my knowledge the valve covers have never been off.
It is a completly different beast than the LT1 though. High torque @ low RPM.

Its just a standard Small Block Chevy, no different in architecture and reliability than all the engines that came before it. So there are thousands of parts that will work for it. Several different EFI intakes to choose from for maximum modifications: Stealthram, miniram, Superram.

get the newest you can afford

My L98 seems easier to work on IMO than the LT1. Tons of torque and fun to drive. However, definitely get the newest you can afford with the options you want.

Only problem I had (that I did not attempt to fix myself) was a leak from the intake. Look for OIL leaks. Other than that great car for doing mods yourself, welcome to the forum!

Welcome to our humble family :)

Since you already have a vehicle with the LT1 engine, why not consider a clean, low-mileage L98? That way, you'll have the best of both worlds. I would also suggest getting at least a 1990 because of the new interior OR a 1991 which has that same new interior but new exterior design. Both years have the L98 engine.

Right, and if you like the cockpit look/feel with the digi-dash go for an '89, otherwise get the '90 or '91.

The '89 had the same D-port Al heads as later year L98s but '90 & '91 had flat pistons for a little higher CR that gave 5hp more over '89.

Thanks for all the input guys. :) It is tough choice between a 90, 91 or a 92. I am starting to lean more towards the '91 L98 Corvette because like you guys mentioned, I like the newer looking exterior and the non-digital gauges, plus like you guys said, it would be a good change from my LT1 Camaro. Once again, thanks a lot. So far from what I can tell, this seems to be a great board, and I am looking forward to joining the ranks of Corvette owners very soon. :)
